Indonesia, 12 August 2019 — the company trip ran from 10 to 12 August 2019 in Bukit Tinggi, Padang, Indonesia.
The trip was sponsored by Puan Nazatul Azlin (Olin), Director of Olin Beauty Sdn. Bhd. (JRM Negeri Sembilan).
We stopped at the Minangkabau Culture Documentation and Information Centre and learned about every detail of the Minangkabau longhouse. Some of Puan Olin's team tried on the traditional Minang dress usually worn at weddings — RM10 to rent each outfit.
Next we climbed up to Puncak Kawa. The view was calm and beautiful, a little like Cameron Highlands with the plantations spread out below. Cool and breezy. At the summit we took in the view over a good meal.
On the road to Istana Pagaruyung in Batu Sangkar, Minangkabau, there were flags in the same colours as Negeri Sembilan — black, red and yellow. The old palace has three floors. People here say the house still has its keepers, and climbing to the third floor feels a little eerie.
Inside Istana Pagaruyung there are colourful drapes everywhere and pillar after pillar. After photographs in front of the palace at Batu Sangkar, we headed to Kadaitoks Bistro, very close to Mount Merapi. There was a band playing, and the mood was easy.
Our first day ended with a night at the Emersia Hotel, Batu Sangkar, Padang.
On the second day we carried on to Taman Panorama Lubang Jepang in Bukit Tinggi, where we learned the story of the Japanese soldiers and the unsettling tunnels. From there we went up to Puncak Lawang, Bukit Tinggi — very high and very cold, and all the better for the grilled corn.
We then checked out of the old hotel and into the Grand Rocky Hotel, Bukit Tinggi, to rest.
On the last day we entered the village of Siti Nurbaya and its sorrowful love story. We went on to Air Manis beach and stopped at the place where Malim Kundang's mother cursed her disobedient son, turning him to stone.
Before heading home we stopped at a mosque whose architecture echoes the roof of a rumah gadang. We closed our final day in Indonesia with a group photograph.
